白飯に酢や塩、砂糖などで調味した酢飯の細長いボール状にし、魚介類などの具材を載せて軽く握った料理。18世紀半ばに江戸(現・東京)で誕生した。当時、屋台で食べるファストフードとして広まった。

Nigiri sushi

A type of sushi in which ingredients such as seafood are served on top of an oval-shaped serving sushi rice seasoned with vinegar, salt, and sugar. It was invented in Edo (now Tokyo) during the mid 18th century and was popularized as a type of fast food at the time.
